Internet Marketing -
Approach It Properly
It
all started in 2003. I was working as an analyst in the
retirement industry and had just returned home after a lengthy
stint on a project in South Africa. I was not ready to return,
I'd been having a ball. I was living the life of a highly paid
and single ex pat, residing in a developing nation with a
third world currency. I could have stayed forever. Yet "the
office" ordered me back home, there were new clients to look
after.
At the time, I was young, fit and very active. My favorite
sports were surfing, snowboarding and kite surfing. All these
sports are dependant on a certain quality of environment,
brought about by specific conditions in the weather. To surf
you need waves that have been brought by a wind that blew
several days and many miles away. To snowboard, you need snow
to fall on your mountain. And to kitesurf you need the wind to
blow good, strong and steady.
I remember the day. I was sitting in my office on St Kilda Rd
Melbourne, realising my Australian Dollars could not buy me
the life I was enjoying in South Africa. Further, as I looked
out the window, I could see all the kites launching at the end
of Fitzroy St. A new wind had just arrived and I couldn't go
and join them, it was only 2.30pm. I still had at least 3
"office hours" left in the day. So I watched, and basically
daydreamed myself into my first mid-life crisis, I wasn't even
30 years old.
It was on this day that the Ocean Feather concept was born.
The concept was simple. I had to free my life of all
constraints and boundaries so I could be like a feather,
floating over the ocean as the weather or a whim took me. That
was the only way I could live the healthy, active life I
wanted. So I needed a new business model. Office hours no
longer cut the mustard. My business model going forward had to
-
be flexible enough that the hours could bend around the
weather, so I could do my work when the weather kept me home
(Ie. no swell, wind or snow) and drop it when the conditions
suited my passions
-
be lucrative enough to support my habits (Ie. of living
life)
-
be portable enough that I could travel when I wanted and for
however long I wanted (visa restrictions permitting)
I could only find one business model that would fit the mould.
An internet based business was the answer. I'd need a laptop,
a mobile phone and a wireless internet connection. The concept
was born. Ocean Feather Pty Ltd was launched.
Over the following years, with little planning and a lot of
luck, the Ocean Feather business developed into what it is
today, a business with 2 parts.
The core of Ocean Feather are my own internet businesses. I
create and run a bunch of websites for my own benefit. This is
also the main motivation which ensures I am always up to date
with the newest and most effective internet marketing
techniques. I spend thousands each year on new information
products to ensure this.
This will always be the core of my business and the reason for
this is simple. My techniques work well enough that
financially, my time is best spent on my own websites. I know
this, my bank account tells me every week. Further, I really
enjoy the creative process of building an internet business
that previously only existed in my mind, and then watching it
turn into a machine that lines my pockets. You can see some of
my internet businesses here:
Internet Based Businesses.
However, my websites were not always successful and it was a
long road to acquiring the knowledge which makes them all
successful today. This is why I opened the second part to the
Ocean Feather business. Simply put, I contract myself to small
and medium sized businesses, helping them implement their
internet marketing strategies.
Having gone down the long road to acquire this knowledge, I
understand you probably do not have the time or the
inclination. You just want to run your business but need the
internet side of things taken care of. Luckily, I still like
to help.
If you are interested in contracting my services, I'd ask you
first review my
engagement model.
To maintain the highest level of quality, I only contract
myself to a very limited number of businesses. My maximum is
10 at any given time. So please review my engagement model and
only contact me if you recognise the value of my service, as
delivered within that engagement model.
